Nothing changes in terms of UK driver's license or procedures until 1 January 2021. On this day, the UK will stop pretending to be a member of the European Union. After Brexit they will continue to be valid as British driver's licenses until their normal expiry date, but they will lose their power as European Union driver's licenses – and may become subject to strict new rules on validity, particularly with regard to free movement and driving.
WILL UK DRIVERS NEED TO APPLY FOR AN INTERNATIONAL DRIVER LICENSES IN ADVANCE TO DRIVE IN THE EU?
Brussels has said that British visitors will be visa-exempt 'third-country nationals' initially, which means that they need not apply for any visa before travel. But within a couple of years, British citizens will be subject to the new European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which the EU is working to impose no later than 2022. This does not mean that the free entry mean equal driving as in the UK, " that will be totally wrong, you will need and international driving permit ( idp) in order to drive in Brussels even if the entry is free. The same procedure and system works for ID cards online.
The system is aimed at reducing the ‘migration, security or public-health risk’ from nationals of visa-exempt third countries, which is what the UK will become after Brexit. ETIAS is similar to the US ESTA scheme. Prospective British drivers to the EU will be required to complete an online form including questions on health, employment and criminal convictions and get an IDP before driving in the EU.
